Little in the way of music has stirred such heated controversy as vocal Pedagogy. I would like to clear up some of the myths you may have heard.
|
| Myth: |
I cannot stay on pitch. Therefore, I’m probably tone deaf and will never be able to sing. |
| Fact: |
Only about 4% of the population is tone deaf. The rest just haven’t yet learned to train their voices to match pitch but are perfectly capable of learning to sing. |
|
| Myth: |
I did not begin studying vocal technique as a child, so it’s too late for me. |
| Fact: |
At any point in your life, you can learn to sing. I’ve watched adults make astounding improvement just by coming to lessons and practicing with their lesson CD. |
|
| Myth: |
Voice teachers only concentrate on producing an operatic sound. I’m interested in pop and rock, so lessons are not for me. |
| Fact: |
It is certainly true that some voice teachers concentrate on the classical sound. However, many successfully teach pop, rock, musical theater, R&B, and every other style out there. |
|
| Myth: |
Belting is dangerous and should be avoided at all costs. Singers should only sing in their head voice. |
| Fact: |
It is true that pulling your chest voice too high is damaging, but there is such a thing as healthy belting. Learning to sing in your mix, a combination of chest and head voice, is a healthy, safe form of belting that will not damage your vocal chords. It is used by such singers as Celine Dion, Faith Hill, and Barbara Streisand. |
